During my web surfing today I came across a couple of very interesting articles that I thought merited posting here. The title of this post is not intended to imply that there is nothing else worth reading, but rather that I found these two pieces to be especially noteworthy. Enjoy.
* Interesting brief on the apparent changes in the Syrian-Russian alliance. You can find it here.
* Interesting article and analysis on the Iranian nuclear program. You can find it here.

I think Russia is more intent on securing economic partners with whom it can exert influence rather than sticking it to the United States. Russia, despite being considered a super power, is trapped for cash, in need of stability, and rife with corruption and other hinderances to foreign investment.
As a result I think that Russia's moves to warm its relations with Syria, to continue doing business with Iran, etc. are not moves designed as much to counter the influence of the US, but rather to secure economic resources and partners independent of US control.
As for a Russian desire for hegemony, I think it goes without saying that Russia would like very much to be back on par with the United States, though I think that if things remain as they are and continue in such a fashion, this is neither realistic in the short-term, nor a real long term potential, as the US is just that far ahead of everyone else.
So in response to Enigma Americana, I would have to say that I do not agree with the assesment that Russia is seeking to take control of oil sources to put the squeeze to Uncle Sam, though this is certainly something to be aware of.
